Moshke the Jew, manager of the village's tavern, is chocking under the heavy load of his debt to the town's Poritz. The Poritz decides to hold a dance competition against Moshke, giving the winner the right to beat his opponent to death. The .Jew has no chance of winning, and is only saved in merit of his piety.
In order to give this production an authentic feel, the Groweis brothers, along with a large crew, traveled to remote villages in Ukraine for filming. Tens of actors participated in the competition scene playing the roles of villagers, drunks, noblemen, soldiers, and servants.
A quality production portraying the difficult life of the Jews in Russia's icy villages.
