About the Midrash Rabbah
The Midrash Rabbah is the largest collection of Aggadah, formed around an original nucleus of
Midrashim known as Midrash Zuta, which was based on the words of the Tannaim.
Unfortunately, Midrash Zuta was mostly lost, and the recovered version, which expanded to
include the teachings of the Amoraim as well, aptly took on the name, “Midrash Rabbah.”
Others posit that since the first of its set, Bereishis Rabbah, begins with the words, “Rabbi
Hoshaia Rabbah began...” the entire Midrash was called, “Midrash Rabbah.”
As it may be, ever since the compilation of the Midrash Rabbah, which began toward the end of
Bayis Sheini, it has never been this simple for a Yid of any learning level to be able to grasp the
