My soul is in my question - the laws of mental health

Can someone who is dealing with depression listen to music on Shabbat? From which strictures in the laws of purity can and is it desirable to exempt those who are dealing with obsessive-compulsive disorder? Is a person whose parents abused him obliged to respect his father and mother?

Today, awareness of mental health is increasing, and many who face challenges in this area turn to rabbis with halachic questions. Besides knowing the laws, the arbitrators must be familiar with the world of psychological and psychiatric research and the therapeutic reality and the changes that occur in the profession from time to time. The ability to give a correct and appropriate answer needs great encouragement and reinforcement.

The main goal of this book is not only to give current and accurate information, but also to place the discourse on mental health at the forefront of the stage. The public who face mental health challenges, and the family members of those who face them, are the most important audience of the book. Another important goal of this book is the contribution to the ongoing struggle to disprove stigma and judgement. Those who are mentally ill deserve support and understanding just like those who are physically ill. The hope is that we will be able to accommodate these patients among us and improve their treatment - and that by observing the Halacha they will be able to feel the closeness of God.

Rabbi Yonatan Rosenzweig is the rabbi of Congregation Netzah Menashe in Beit Shemesh, teaches in various settings and is an author of books. In 2005 he founded the Maagli Nefesh center for practice in the fields of Halacha, community and mental health. He lives in Beit Shemesh with his wife and their five children.

Dr. Shmuel Harris, an immigrant from Australia, is a senior psychiatrist who served as the director of the psychiatric service at Hadassah Mount Scopus. In recent years, he established the Dvir Institute, which provides a multidisciplinary service and treats the English-speaking population in Israel. Lives in Jerusalem with his wife and their five children.
