It is said to be a Sephardic custom that on the nights of Passover, Shavuot and Hoshana Rabba, the men would gather in the synagogues and stay there all night except Passover where they would stay until midnight reading well-known passages from the Torah, the Midrash and Adra Rabba, as quoted in the "Sefer Kriyi Moed" printed in Baghdad in 1851. This custom is called "Mishmarah".
