The Torah stories, which are read every week, raise questions and doubts in us and stimulate curiosity. Every year anew we ask ourselves questions like, how was our mother Rachel buried alone in Bethlehem? Why is it forbidden to mix meat and milk? Why circumcise at such a young age? What pleasure does God derive from sacrificing sacrifices on the altar? And also, where was Gd in all the years of suffering in Egypt? To all of these a personal and existential dimension creeps in, and questions about the Torah become questions about ourselves.

Eretz VeShamayim is a conceptual book on the foundations of Jewish thought, the world of man and this week's Torah portion. Its uniqueness is that it is based on the sermons and writings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe who was known as having his head in heaven and his feet in the earth. The Rebbe delved into the words of Chazal and found in them the living water, those that give the joy of thought and joy of heart. In his sermons he would present the familiar layers of Halacha, Talmud and traditional commentators, Between body and soul, sand and holiness, man with his God.

This is the way of this book, which also seeks to provide sharp insights into our private daily lives. Disturbing questions such as whether human mating is determined from above, whether dreams have meaning and how to curb anger or jealousy, are discussed incidentally and make reading a book multidimensional and enlightening.
