There was once a chossid who gained fame from the fact that he would translate each word of davening into Yiddish. His friends asked him what was the point of doing so. He replied: "My yetzer hara understands Yiddish better than Hebrew. I want to talk to him, to tackle him head-on and say, 'Mister, what you're doing is wrong! I believe in Hashem, and I will do whatever Hashem wants!"

This is what we are looking to accomplish in davening: to connect to Hashem, to feel like a servant before his master, and to conquer our yetzer hara. And this is why it's important to understand the meaning of the words, and to have at least a basic kavanah in tefillah.
