A story is told of the holy Reb Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev, who surprised his congregants one day when, after Shmoneh Esreh, he turned to a few of them and said, "Welcome back to town." At their questioning looks, he explained, "I noticed that during the Davening your minds had traveled to the fair in Leipzig, and to your merchandise warehouse, and to the home of a big customer in the next town over. So now I am welcoming you back." His message was clear: for the time spent Davening, the mind must be free of any distracting thoughts.
Chassidus teaches that, "Great waters cannot extinguish the love that a Jew has for Hashem." The "great waters" are worries that one might have regarding how to earn a livelihood, and we are taught that with effort we can keep our minds free of even these thoughts during the time that we are expressing our love for Hashem, the time of Davening.
