| What
Is Artscroll? |
|

|
Artscroll is on a mission to bring ancient texts that were
inaccessible to the average layman and make it so simple that anyone can just “pick
up and go”. Perhaps their most popular is the Classic Stone edition of the
Chumash.

| Where did Artscroll come from? |
|
Artscroll was started almost 30 years ago
from inside a second floor apartment in a small building in
Brooklyn, NY. It began with a thin book published as a project in memory of a friend and ballooned into what
took the local community on a trip that continues till this day. That first book
was the Book of Esther from their 5 volume set on megillos.

|
| When did it all begin? |
|
Artscroll began almost 30 years ago when
English judaica was first starting to take shape. Not knowing
where it would go there was no time limit and no schedules. Today
Artscroll works on tight deadlines and heavy hours. This is
largely because Artscroll is in the midst of translating the
Talmud. And the tight schedule of Daf yomi (learning a page a day schedule)
keeps them on their toes.

A new
translation and commentary on the books of Joshua and Judges, with the complete
Hebrew commentaries of Rashi, Radak, and Metzudos.
You have made the Stone
Edition of the Chumash, by Rabbi Nosson Scherman, the standard
English-language translation and commentary throughout the world. Countless
people have requested a similar work on the Prophets and Writings. We have heard
you!
Thanks to the brilliance
of the ArtScroll/Mesorah team of scholars and writers — led by Rabbi Nosson
Scherman — the tradition continues, with The Rubin Edition —
a translation and commentary of the Prophets that will sweep the
English-speaking world, providing new dimensions of understanding and beauty.
There is a new degree of
education and sophistication among English-speaking Jews, and this is a work
that speaks to them.
For most people, Tanach is
something they studied a smattering of when they were too young to understand
it. The result is that we have vague recollections of some of the narratives,
and even less comprehension of its messages. But the Talmud tells us that the
Books of the Prophets contain only prophecies that were needed by future
generations. This new commentary not only brings the verses alive, it does so in
such a way that they are actually speaking to us — in language, in outlook, in
aspiration for spiritual growth.
The Rubin Edition's inclusion of the major Hebrew commentaries gives this work a high degree of
versatility, so that it can be studied on many levels.

(Hardcover) Rashi`s classic commentary on the Torah, presented with a level of
clarity and understanding you never thought possible. What textual difficulty
troubled Rashi? Why did he choose this particular comment? What of Ramban`s
objection? How does the Torah`s language indicate Rashi`s p`shat? To which
passage in the Targum does Rashi refer? Anyone who studies Rashi, the father of
all commentators,` will have questions like these. Behind the deceptive
simplicity of Rashi is a depth and clarity that has engaged the minds of great
scholars for over eight hundred years. In this brilliant new treatment, Rashi is
presented in the manner of the Schottenstein Edition of the Talmud, the method
that has won praise the world over:
